Woodland TURF TALK         April 1, 2005
 July 2005

Captain's Comment

Well I guess when you wish hard enough for something, sometimes your wish comes true! What a great June we had.....It really felt more like summer, but who's complaining seeing we are finally rid of those rainy, raw days of May. The grounds crew has been working diligently "round the clock" to keep the course in good shape for your Golfing enjoyment. I am hoping for a repeat of great weather in July as we had in June. Let's keep our fingers crossed!!

We had an exciting number of events in the month of June starting with The Challenge Cup where youngsters from all parts of New England were here to test their talents.

Our Two Day Member Guest was a lot of fun. With the heat and humidity bearing down on us, we had a successful Tournament with winners walking away with 2006 Golf Memberships. The first Mixed Scotch of the Season was a lot of fun where everyone got to enjoy not only the golf but the company of good friends.

This was the first year that the RIGA Parent Daughter Golf Tournament was held at Woodland Greens. We had many daughters enjoying not only the course but time with their Dad's. The day was another hazy, hot and humid one interrupted for a short time with some showers......but despite the interruption, all went well with the 32 teams that participated. Ages ranged from 9 years old to 81 years old...

July hopes to be a great month. A number of events are planned....The Member-3 Guest and the Member-Member. Please check your schedules and be a part of the Woodland Community and participate. Support your Club!

Have a safe 4th of July & Happy Golfing!

Dave

Tournament Results

Challenge Cup

Recently, the United States Challenge Cup conducted sectional qualifying for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship at Woodland Greens G.C. Over one hundred boys and girls from eight states competed for sixteen qualifying spots in seven age divisions.

Marlboro's Nick Harris fired a 6-over par 76 and birdied the first playoff hole to defeat Vineyard Haven's Tony Grillo for medallist honors in the Boys 14-15 Division. Fifteen other junior golfers will advance with Harris and Grillo to the national championship, which will be contested July 21-31 at the PGA National Golf Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The Challenge Cup would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the Woodland Greens membership for their support of this event and junior golf.

Congratulations to Chad Spencer for being chosen to play in this year's Northeast Amateur Tournament. He fired a 65 on the second day of the tournament which put him three strokes off the lead going into the third round.... Chad played well in the final two rounds to represent himself, the University of Rhode Island and Woodland Greens in fine fashion... Way to go Chad!!

Club Championship

The Club Championship is well underway. Chad Spencer fired a 69 for Medallist Honors. The tournament fielded four Divisions this year. The Championship Division, First Division, The 50 - 59 year old Division, and 60 and over Division. All results will be in the August Newsletter.

Mixed Scotch

HAZY HOT & HUMID....Those are the best words to describe the weather conditions for the first Mixed Scotch of the Season... We had a good turnout of people who not only enjoyed being with friends, but had a lot of laughs...... (mainly for those who's partners had put them in places on the golf course they have never been to before.... and topping it off was the great food again prepared by Ron our Chef....Thanks to all who participated. Golf Tip of the Month

SAND SHOTS

BEST TIP: Hit with the force necessary to throw a handful of sand onto the green.

With an open stance, keep weight evenly distributed and play ball one inch forward of center, with club face slightly open. Make smooth three-quarter swing, letting chest turn away from target on backswing. Hit with the same force you would use if you were throwing a handful of sand to the hole.
