Captain's Comment

Summer has arrived!! I am hoping for a great month of July; with the help of "mother nature" providing us with some great golfing weather...We had an exciting number of events in the month of June starting with The Challenge Cup where youngsters from not only parts of New England tested their talents but we had some youngsters from other parts of the world. We had a couple of youngsters all the way from South Africa participating...Great bunch of kids!

Our Two Day Member Guest was a lot of fun. We had a successful Tournament with winners walking away with some very nice prizes.

Qualifying for the Club Championship took place last month...Matches are now underway and the results will be in the next Newsletter!

July hopes to be a great month. A number of events are planned....The Member 3 Guest, and the Two Day Member Member. Please check your schedules and be a part of the Woodland Community and participate.. Support your Club!

Also, a little help would be appreciated trying to keep the course in good shape. PLEASE, fix your ball marks, replace your divots, rake the traps, and FOLLOW the Pull cart and Push cart signs! Please keep all Pull and Push carts off of the Tees and Aprons. If you are riding in a Gas Cart, please follow all Cart signs....The course was over saturated last month and is already getting soft in certain spots. PLEASE help us out in following these simple procedures.....

Thanks and enjoy the Season!

Have a safe 4th of July & Happy Golfing!

Dave

Did you ever wonder where the words divot, mulligan and bogey came from??

"Divot"

What a great word for those small sod patches we golfers knock out of our courses! The word comes from the Scottish word for a small square of sod used for roofing. In the U.S., the common joke about a large divot is that you could take it home and sod your lawn with it. In Scotland, the same joke, presumably, ends with a new roof for your home. It's interesting that the word means both the bit of sod that goes flying ("Please replace your divots") and the hole left by the departing sod ("That shot came to rest in a divot").

"Mulligan"

For everyone who's ever asked, "Why didn't I do that the first time?" The mulligan is golf's version of the do-over. Some sneer at them. Some embrace them. Some call them "breakfast balls." Regardless, the mulligan is a great golf term. The term comes from the name of either David Mulligan, a hotelier, or John A. "Buddy" Mulligan, a locker room attendant. Suffice it to say, they were both known for replaying shots off the tee, for one reason or another.

"Bogey"

As perfect as shank maybe to describe, well, a shank, bogey is just as perfect or more to describe using one more stroke to complete a hole than required by par. Bogey is not as menacing as the shanks. It usually doesn't cripple your round the way a case of the shanks can. It can actually be a good score for high handicappers or beginning golfers - make 18 bogeys and you shoot 90 at most courses. Bogey is still a perfect term for just missing par. Britains often related the word bogey to the Boogey Man… it can creep up on you and, pow, you're another stroke over par. It turns out that's exactly where the term comes from. It was first used in Britain, borrowed from a popular song at the time called "The Bogey Man," in which the title character hid in the shadows.
